Stop, close, duplicate, and delete

The difference between stopping, closing, duplicating, and deleting an agent — and when to use each.

Updated 2026-05-29·2 min read

Coinrule gives you four agent management actions — Stop, Close position, Duplicate, and Delete — each with different consequences for your open positions. Choosing the wrong one can leave a trade running unmonitored, so this article explains what each action does and the safe sequence for exiting a live strategy.

What does Stop do?

Stop pauses the agent's evaluation loop. It does NOT close any open position.

Use when:

  • You want to pause a strategy temporarily without losing the position
  • You want to edit the strategy and relaunch

After stopping:

  • The agent shows Stopped (or Stopped — position open)
  • The position remains open on the exchange
  • You can restart the agent at any time with Resume

What does Close position do?

Close position immediately places a market order to close the open position on the exchange. The agent status changes to Stopped.

Use when:

  • You want to stop the agent AND exit the current trade

This action is in the ⋯ → Close position menu and is only available when there's an open position.

What does Duplicate do?

Duplicate creates a copy of the agent in an Interpreting state. You can change any field before relaunching — including the exchange account.

Use when:

  • You want to run the same strategy on a different exchange
  • You want to try a variation of the parameters
  • You want to restart with paper trading before going back live

What does Delete do?

Delete removes the agent's record from the platform. It does NOT close open positions.

Only delete an agent if you are certain there is no open position. Check the strategy detail page first. A deleted agent with an open position will run unmonitored on the exchange until you manually close it.

After deletion, the strategy history, trade log, and P&L are permanently removed.

What is the right order of operations?

To cleanly exit a live strategy:

  1. Check for an open position in the strategy detail page
  2. If in a position: click ⋯ → Close position
  3. Wait for the close confirmation in the activity feed
  4. Click ⋯ → Stop (or Delete if you want to remove it entirely)
